John Maddocks is an independent researcher and community accountant. Recently retired from paid work, John has over 30 years of experience as an accountant, working in and with voluntary and community groups, charities, co-operatives and credit unions. He has a broad experience of charities, in various roles including as: board member, manager, employee and accountant.

Prior to retiring John undertook PhD research, looking at social accounting and, in particular, accounting for social value. Previous work roles include: Policy and Technical manager at CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy), Director of Research at the Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives (CEARC), at Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia, and many years working as a Community Accountant. He has continued his involvement in research which currently includes: co-operative accounting, and different approaches to accounting for social value.

John was Treasurer of UKSCS from September 2016 to March 2021, and has recently rejoined the board of UKSCS initially as a co-opted and then elected Trustee and Treasurer.
