Abstract

This paper suggests that structural adaptation of agricultural co-operatives to a more intensive international competition and a market with free trade should not be hindered by competition authorities with little understanding of the special characteristics of farm co-operatives. It examines the competition provisions in the Treat of the European Union together with national legislation to consider the implications for the development of agricultural co-operatives.
