This article is a response to Dr R. Briscoe's articles appearing in previous issues of the Journal: New life for co-operative structures (No. 62) and Traders and idealists (No, 63). The articles outline what is essentially an idealistic view of the nature and practice of co-operation, particularly in relation to the British consumer movement. In doing so, he clarifies the rhetoric and reality of co-operative action.
