Co-operation has appealed to people over the years for a variety of reasons and it can be argued that historically the vast majority of ordinary members have joined consumer co-operatives because of the co-operative dividend. This paper looks at the advantages of the dividend, the reasons for its abandonment, the introduction of the dividend stamps, co-operative principles, and membership benefit schemes.
