Abstract

This paper is based on empirical research undertaken by the Institute for Co-operative Research at the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, in co-operation with the

Department for Small and Medium Enterprises of the Faculty for Business Administration of the University of Siegen, Germany. The aim was to investigate the reasons behind the declining number of registered co-operatives in Germany despite an increasing need for co-operation between small and medium enterprises.
