This paper considers the practice of becoming a member of a consumer co-operative and the practice connected to co-operative values and principles that contributes to people remaining as members. It provides both an historical and comparative account of the development of consumer co-operation in Malmö, Sweden, and Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.
