We were pleased to welcome Paul Thumbar who joined us from Australia for this Conversations event to provide an insight into his research and work as director of the interdisciplinary team focused on co-operative and mutual enterprises and mutual value creation.

Paul is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the Monash Business School, Melbourne, Australia and the Director of the Mutual Value Impact Lab. He is a global expert in performance measurement and evaluation in member-owned and purpose-led organisations.

One of Paul's research projects with industry partner, the Business Council of Cooperatives and Mutuals (BCCM) which is the national peak body for co-operative and mutual enterprises (CMEs) in Australia, has resulted in the development of a strategic performance measurement framework, the Mutual Value Measurement (MVM) framework. This framework has been commercialised to BCCM and taken up by CMEs in Australia, UK, and the US.

Paul’s research has received global and Australian awards. Paul has also worked in senior roles in industry (banking, insurance and consulting) prior to moving to academia.
