Elisavet Mantzari, Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and UKSCS trustee, together with Maureen McCulloch, Oxford Brookes University, and Daphne Rixon, Saint Mary’s University have received an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account fund at the University of Birmingham.

The funding will support the work of developing a collaborative body to produce workable recommendations addressing the key components of a UK Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) for accounting and reporting for co-operatives.

The project is also supported by Co-operatives UK and the Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives (CEARC).

Currently, there are no SORPs or specific accounting standards for the co-operative sector in the UK. Existing accounting and accountability practices fail to reflect the values and principles of co-operatives, thereby failing to support them in meeting their purposes.

The aim of the project is to set up a UK co-operative SORP working group to produce and pilot recommendations through focus groups on standardising co-operative accounting.

The project team is currently working towards identifying key users for engagement such as:

  • Co-operative accounting and auditing practitioners
  • Co-operative business consultants and officers
  • Academics working in the area of cooperative accounting and reporting
  • Professional accountancy bodies
